What you didn’t know about… FINLAND!

Do you know why Finland is a perfect target for your campaigns? It is the country with the lowest population density and (except for the short and beautiful summer) is too cold for window-shopping. When analysing the e-commerce market, Finns have not previously been as keen shoppers as their Scandinavian neighbours in Sweden, Norway and Denmark. Although the gap is narrowing and the market is growing rapidly, we should take a look at the main characteristics of the Finnish e-commerce industry and customers’ online behaviour.

Finland's population is of around 5.5 million people, of which 94% use the internet.

4 million of these internet users purchase online and an estimated 56% of the population is on social media (mostly Twitter). Indeed, we are talking about a small but really active e-market!

Whilst setting up your Finnish campaign, bear in mind some essential information in order to be successful:

  • The most common reasons to look for products outside Finland are: the product is not available on local sites (create a sense of uniqueness in your campaign's description!), it is cheaper and there is a wide range of colours/styles (web shops with a wide products range are often missing in Scandinavian countries).

  • Only 5.5% of the population has Swedish as its primary language. So, do not try to cover Finland with your Swedish campaigns, it will hurt your conversion rate :)

  • 2 out of 3 Finnish people shop online using the e-payment services that Finnish Banks offer, or by invoice. However, the percentage of credit card payments is increasing more and more.

  • Finnish customer’s love a clear and trustworthy communication so do not hesitate to stress in your campaign's description that buyers can contact Teezily support with any questions. ([email protected])

And what about niches? Finnish people are literally obsessed with saunas (they claim to have invented it - so do the Swedish!). Finland has 187,888 lakes (so each activity related represents a good niche), it also has the most amount of heavy metal bands per capita (can you believe it?), and it hosts one of the weirdest world championships: Korvatunturi welcome Wife Carrying World Championships once a year, which is a pretty big deal in Finland!Need further information about this interesting e-market?
