What you didn’t know about… FRANCE

Are you planning to launch campaigns in France? Have you already tried to target the French market and it didn’t work? This is because you hadn’t read our 11 funny facts about this country yet!

Here is the first of a series of posts with some interesting insights about French people and their country so you can get to know your audience better, making more appropriate designs and targeting in a more appropriate way when selling t-shirts to them!

1. French is the official language of several countries (not just France!) -> Think about targeting your French campaigns also to Switzerland and Luxembourg, where you can even set higher selling prices! France is 75 million people's mother tongue and the only language (with English) that’s taught in every country in the world, so there is a big potential here!

2. Just 34% of the French can speak English -> Remember to translate your campaigns’ titles and descriptions, as well as your ads’ texts to French if you want to maximize conversions. Do not hesitate to ask our team for help in [email protected]!

3. The French eat snails, frog’s legs and horse meat. They are also cheese experts. Did you know that France produces over 400 types of cheese?! -> They are very gourmands and foodies in general. Campaigns related to their sophisticated cuisine are always very welcome!

4. It is usual that French people kiss each other as a form of greeting. The number of times they kiss varies depending on region. For example, in Corsica, the number of kisses can be as many as 5! -> Think about funny designs regarding this curiosity!

5. The French government has revoked just in 2013 a 200-year-old law that made it illegal for Parisian women to wear trousers. So until then, it was theoretically illegal to wear anything else than a skirt if you were a women! Awkward but true! -> Humor, revolution…any ideas?

6. France has the highest number of ski resorts in the world while Mont-Blanc is the highest peak in Europe -> There is a huge community of people who like winter sports such as skiing or snowboarding, but also climbing or trekking could be good ideas!

7. France has won he most Nobel Prizes for Literature than any other country in the world while French are passionate about reading, especially on the metro! -> Food for thought, some French classics (titles in French): Le Petit Prince, Les Misérables, L’Étranger, Madame Bovary, Le Fantôme de l’Opéra, Les Trois Mousquetaires…

8. Famous French inventions include the metric system, the hot air balloon, the submarine, and the parachute -> You can use “What’s your superpower?” design or patriotic/ French-proud slogans adding this information.

9. A couple of demographic facts about the capital city: 20% of the total French live in the Parisian region and there are more Bretons (from the French Bretagne) currently living in Paris than in Bretagne! Are the “X girl living in X” , “Living in X, X roots” or “Living in X doesn’t mean I’m X” designs already coming to your mind? Last but not least: there is a bit or rivalry between parisians and the rest (use your sense of humor here!) and Paris is also known as “city of lights” (lights actually refers to the number of intellectuals who live there).

10. French film production is second in the world, cinema was invented in France and there are prestigious schools and universities for cinema studies. French people are usually a lot into the 7th art!-> Don’t forget this attractive niche!

11. Napoleon was only 5’6 inch tall and it’s illegal to name a pig Napoleon in France -> Use this information wisely!
